A Hidden Block is a staple of the Mario series, first appearing in the original Super Mario Bros. They are ? Block that are invisible until the player activates them.

Appearances

Super Mario Bros.

There are many Hidden Blocks throughout the game. However, the first one appears in World 1-1 after the fourth pipe, but before the first pit. It contains a 1-Up Mushroom. There is one in the first level in every world like this.

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe introduces a Challenge Mode where there is a Hidden Block in each level that contains a Yoshi Egg.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels

The Hidden Blocks are more dangerous, with some containing Poison Mushroom and others preventing Mario or Luigi from jumping.

The first Hidden Block is in World 1-2. Roughly halfway into the level, after a green Warp Pipe with a Piranha Plant inside, there are two ? Blocks, and above the first one is a Hidden Block containing a Starman.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

The first Hidden Block is located in World 1-1, after the rolling hill with a green Warp Pipe toward the end. When the player's character arrives, they must wait briefly and walk into the secret area with three Hidden Blocks, each containing a 1-Up Mushroom.

New Super Mario Bros. 2

There is a Hidden Block in World 1-Tower. It contains a vine leading to the secret exit.

New Super Mario Bros. U

In this game and its Nintendo Switch remake, a Hidden Block first appears at Acorn Plains Way. When entering a Warp Pipe to the second Star Coin, the player's character is taken to a sub-area that has Hidden Blocks.

In New Super Luigi U, there is a Hidden Block in Crooked Cavern, where it is at the very start after entering the underground area.

Hidden Blocks are mostly invisible during normal gameplay. They will occasionally sparkle with the light and can be seen if the player blows in the microphone or touches with the Wii U GamePad. Ground-pounds can also reveal nearby blocks. There are also wide Hidden Blocks that are functionally similar to Wide ? Blocks. The first Hidden Block is in Koopa Troopa Cave.

Super Mario Maker

The Super Mario Maker games give the Hidden Block a sprite so the player can place them in levels.

Super Mario Odyssey

Hidden Blocks act similar to 3D World, but the Moe-Eye can see them with his sunglasses. They are also seen in the Cap Kingdom.
