Fish Bones are recurring enemies in the Mario series, debuting in Super Mario World. They are undead fish skeletons, more specifically those of Cheep Cheeps. Unlike how Dry Bones are the sole variant of Koopa Troopas, Fish Bones are one of three skeletal Cheep Cheep incarnations, alongside Honebons from Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins and Jeans de Fillet in the Yoshi's Island series.

Appearances

Super Mario World

In Super Mario World, Fish Bones are enemies that Mario and Luigi only ever encounter twice: first in the Vanilla Fortress and later in the underwater area of Bowser's Castle. They travel quickly in a straight line. Fish Bones are normally invincible, but in the Game Boy Advance version Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World, they can be defeated from a cape attack by Cape Mario.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Fish Bones return as enemies in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The game introduces a signature attack for the Fish Bones: they lock onto Mario or another playable character, signaled by their eyes turning red, and then charge straight toward them. Since Fish Bones cannot change direction while charging, they are defeated if they hit a wall or even another Fish Bone.

Super Mario Maker

In Super Mario Maker Fish Bones are one of several enemies that the player can put into courses. The method for doing so is unique and showcases a direct connection to Dry Bones, as the player must place a Dry Bones into the water to change it into a Fish Bones.

Super Mario Maker 2

In Super Mario Maker 2, Fish Bones have been made into separate elements from Dry Bones.
